It's actually 18 1/2" I have a Mossberg Shorty. That's the barrel length. When I was at Ft. Bragg, my neighborhood had the best armed Neighborhood Watch ever! Most everybody in my neighborhood was SF, Delta, AF Para Rescue, I even had a German GSG9 guy there. Let's see, one MP SSG had a sawed-off that was sooooo short, the barrel was less than two inches from the mean end of the shell. Not much for distance, but a hell of a spread! :D One of my neighbors was an E7 (SFC) with SFOD Delta. You might remember him from the national news back in the late eighties. He and another guy I didn't know were driving through South Carolina, and got pulled over. They had a tarp over the bed of their truck, and when the Patrolman pulled it back, he found a 500lb GP Aerial Ordinance Bomb. They found the fuse in the glove box. Quite the funny!

I used to have the Hummer of shotguns; Franchi SPAS 12. Heavy, but slip her into semi-auto mode with eight rounds in the tube............what a rush! Wish I could have afforded the SPAS15, but now I live in the People's Republic of California, and even the trusty old SPAS12 is illegal. Sold before I moved out here.

The federal law is 18" barrel for a shotgun, 16" barrel for a rifle. Most people add 1/2" to avoid all ATF problems. Both must have a minimum overall length of 26".

This is for weapons that started out as long guns. If you take a .30-06 bolt action rifle, cut the stock off at the pistol grip, and cut the barrel off at 8", this is an illegal weapon. If you buy an unbarreled action, add an 8" barrel, mount it in a pistol grip, you have a very powerful handgun. Perfectly legal. If the action was ever used in a rifle, you can't use it to build a handgun.

This is for arms that accept modern ammo. Don't know about muzzle loaders. Although some legal handguns will accept .410 shotshells, I believe larger guages are illegal in handguns.

State laws can be more restrictive.

Jeez guys, he said twice it was a pistol. I imagine it's a repro of what you might expect to see on a pirate ship movie? In India it's called a Howda gun and it was used to back up a rifle when hunting tiger from elephant back. It was to keep a tiger from getting on the elephant with you! Monty
