Good evening fellow TNET members. Hot and dry to say the least. I'm becoming a muscle man digging this hard ground with my little trowel. It get easier at 6 inches. I started my hunt today deciding on something I should have done already, and that is buying a roll of string an boxing off the areas I have already hunted, because I know this is the only way to get at every inch of ground. Well, it started off slow and I became frustrated 2 hours in with meager finds. I wanted some coins that I know this place has. Finally 3 hours in I got a strong hit to the right. And it stayed to the right as I scanned the area. I was set in the coin mode and had the sensitivity at 3/4. After digging a large hole I pulled out a large object. I knew what it was as I had found another during the 4Th of July weekend. Sure enough out came this beauty. I have got in the habit now as not to rub the coins like I used to. But I had to see the date so I lightly scratched the dirt and it was an 1852. It's bathing in olive oil now but with a little bath in water and soap it cleaned up real nice. I also found what looks to be a wedge for splitting logs. Very crude tool and the head is slightly mushroomed. I also found my second oil lamp top, old shotgun casing, a 22 cal. shell casing, and a few other items. That circular thing has a 5 on it. When I found that I was certain it was a large cent. Thanks for looking again. I will be gone on the road for a while on a trip to Houston No more hunting until I get back. :'( Thanks Ron Smith

That is the nicest dug Largie I've seen on here! Congrats! Looks like it was just buried

I hope you don't think I just burried it ;D. Most all of finds there have come out of the ground like that.... it's the tame soil around these parts.

Soaked in warm water for a little while, then tooth brush and bath soap and a little bath in olive oil, which I was advised not to do that. So 1 hour in olive oil than rubbed dry with towel. That was it

She sure cleaned up nice...and that wheat penny is a good year...too bad it isn't a DDO or matte, or is it? I'd look at that baby hard...Congrats

Hard to tell. Looks like it is not but I'll re-check it closely :icon_scratch:

The holed object with a 5 on it is a petticoat weight. They were attached at the bottom of a dress in the 1800s and early 1900s in order to prevent it from coming up. Good ole John Walter told my uncle what they were.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

I've found a couple of those weight thingys and wondered what they were. Now I know. Thanks. Also, that is one of the nicest old coppers I've seen come out of the ground. I wish my area was old enough to find one of those.

Thanks unclejessy67. I've been fortunate to hunt that place :)

That is an amazing find...but I gotta ask...why the olive oil? That coin didn't look like it needed a thing!

Thanks for sharing the great pics! that is a really beautiful home, how old is it?

I just wanted to "wax it up" a little and to give it a new look. I'm just "too much" sometimes :D

The house was foe sale. They took it off of the market for a while because it's too much (w/45 acres of land) The realtors internet add said 1836. Everything I mostly have found there dates pre-1900
