As my collection on 40% and 90% halves grows I'm starting to wonder if there is a better way to store them. I been buying coin tubes, but they're starting to get expensive. I've been thinking of using freexer bags. I know some of you have massive collections of these things, what do you use?

I use the plastic tubes as well to store them. I bought about 10 tubes. One of the banks that I purchased halves from last year, brought out all of the halves from the vault in those plastic tubes,so I had about 20 free tubes.

I don't think I would store the halves in plastic bags due to the chemical make up of the plastic,as it might change or discolor the halves. Unless you don't care what the halves will look like later and you are just going to sell them for scrap,go ahead and put them in the plastic bags. You can also store them in paper wrappers that you get from the banks free of charge and label the wrapper.

However, if you have any Walkers,Franklins or any special halves or coins I would put them in the 2 X 2 cardboard holders.

Any Walkers, Franklins, Merc, etc go in 2x2s. I like opening the notebook and flipping thruoght the few pages that I've filled. Anyone know of any place to get tubes cheaper? I found 100 on Ebay for $27.00 shipped.

One of those nice canvas bags that halves sometimes come in would do the trick.

I keep my nice ones in plastic tubes. I keep the rest in Antique mason jars ;D

Wow what a beautiful picture. Anyway, most my 40% and 60% I dont worry too much about as they are in crappy shape anyway, and silver is silver. I am curious though. I am getting quite a few of the 2002 and beyond coins. I know they will not be worth more than face for a long time. How does everyone store those?

I have a Franklin coin collector book & that is where they go. The repeat Franklins go to the holders along with the Walkers. I also put any really mint looking condition 40% & 90% Kennedy's I find in holders as well.

I used to keep all others is those big pretzel containers until it got too heavy, so I decided to roll them for easier storage. I used those $20 wrappers....less rolls. I labeled them by year and put a little information of the content on the roll. I plan on giving these to my grandchildren so that is why I put the information on them. I don't want them to cash them in for face value...lol. Here is a picture of one.

Scott - TW is right....that is a very nice picture....phew!!!

I just carefully unwrap the looser rolls I get and reuse them for myself. Works fine. If I get really nice examples I put them in a 2x2. Other then that all my 90% go in the plastic rolls. I think you can get a box of 100 plastic rolls for under 25 bucks.... so they arnet that expensive.

Fruitbat: I don't think 100/$25-27 is too much considering 100 hold 2000 Halves! that's a lot of Silver!

for me there is just something cool about having a roll full of silver halves or dollars rather then a bunch of 2x2 holders. They are already pretty wore and its not going to hurt them at all. Maybe I'm just goofy that way. But if they are nice they go in 2x2s.

Ain't it though? ;D

It was an ebay auction for 1,000 '64 Kennedy's that had me drooling, all were BU and looked so nice coming out of that bag, I just had to save the pic.

I keep my AU Kennedys, Walkers and Franklins in 2 X 2's, and just keep the rest in plastic rolls. I can get a 5-pack of the rolls at the hobby shop for a couple bucks, not too bad.

My completed rolls of Kennedys (40% & 90%) and Franklins go into paper rolls. Rolls in the process of being completed are in plastic tubes. Walkers (when I find any!) will go in a cardboard 2x2 if I don't have the date or it's a better example of a date I already have. Any Barber or older is a definite 2x2.

Completed rolls gather in an empty cigar box which hold about 30 rolls, plus they're pretty sturdy for transport to the coin shop on "cash in" day.

I just recently started converting over to the plastic tubes once I found that Shinders, a hobby shop chain in the Twin Cities, sells them 100 for $19.99 plus tax. Also, they have let me mix and match 100 rolls of any denomination for the same price.

Good deal Gman - I too use the screw top clear tubes for storage in a safe.
I can see them all stacked up, even when they are in the tubes :) I love them.

Paid what was already mentioned , about 27.00 ?? ish , for 100 Tubes from JPSCorner.

Little did I know, I needed about 60 of them right off the bat !! Wont be long till Im
diving into another 100 Tubes... or selling off some 40%. Not sure which yet :) I love
HOARDING haha.

I be luvin 'da Gankin yo !

How come I thought Shinders was a magazine shop? Isn't there one in Downtown,Minneapolis as well as other locations? I remember buying magazines and pogs(many years ago) there. LOL

Yes they are in multiple locations including downtown. And yes they a magazine shop. But they also sell some hobby stuff: sports cards, comics, coin supplies, etc.

I got some of those square tubes - 100 for $29 off the internet and have some waterproof, army ammo boxes.
Put a dessicant pack in that and you can store it underwater if you want.
Ammo boxes have good handles and stack nicely.
This one holds 42 rolls. I think they cost around $3 - $5 at the surplus store. They should outlast us!

The ammo boxes are a great idea!!! I got a dozen of those thing in the garage. Why didn't I think of that.
I guess $27.00 shipped isn't a bad price consitering I've been getting the for $.50 each.

I use the same 5x5x2 box that they come in to store rolls of 40%. I turn the box inside out so that it looks like a regular box. I also use the same wrappers that the coins come in. Once you have $1000 worth I would store them in a canvas bag. I don't think on sell day the dealer is going to want to bust out 100 rolls.

make sure the amo cans are cleaned out very well if they had a bad round in it that leaked it will turn all your coins blacker then black in a quick hurry. I learned that the hard way.
