I found this hammer on an old site that I know was vacated in the early 1800's. The hammer has a metal handle, ( not sure if that makes it a newer hammer). Thanks in advance.
Ferriers hammer seems like likely ID. I've seen a lot of old hammers with a piece of pipe, or iron rod for a handle and I'm sure some were made that way but I've always assumed that most of them were repaired that way after someone got tired of breaking wood handles. soak it in evapo rust overnight and it'll clean right up
I've read that these Farrier's-hammers had that thick iron rod handle so they could be used as the "linch pin" on the tongue shaft of a Conestoga-type wagon.
