I'd say that is a well used hammer. Isn't it strange that some hammers are polished with use, while others are pitted and beat to death from use??

Hello Rock,

Thank you for the book list suggestions.

Regards,

Not sure on this one cause it has a dimple on each side. Made from a quartzite cobble. Broken Hoe next to it the bit section.

Nice one rock.

A dimple on both sides is a very common characteristic of hammer stones.

couldnt it be used as both a hammer and a nutting stone?....dual utilitarian....maybe im off on what you mean by a nutting stone....the stones here in ny have dimples on each side ...we just call em pitting or hammer stones....i would suppose the polishing and or wether its beat up would depend on type of stone its made from and how hard it is

First Hammer I have ever found with dimples on both sides or either side. I did see a lot of broken quartzite cobbles in the field. Guess they preferred them in that area. Thanks for the info quito and NC

Are the depressions used for holding purposes?
