Decided to change pace from the Roman Site & search for some hammered. It also meant we could be closer to the car for the thundery showers.
We picked a Medieval Site that we had discovered last year. We actually put it on the map & not where the historical records/maps thought it was.
It had been shallow turned & there where plenty of targets, and lots of lead.
After 4.5 hrs gridding we were wondering why we hadn't had at least 1 hammered. So as an act of desperation, we ended the day on a big wandering loop up & around the slope. It was on my way back down from this loop I lucked into the hammered.:icon_thumright:
5 hours Total:

Winged Spurs Livery Button
3 Jettons
1 Rose Farthing
Medieval Taylors Thimble
Scale Armour?
Crotal Bell
Tudor Cauldron Foot
Bronze Bead
1550-1650 Spec. Buckle (our best example of this type)
1640/1 Charles I Half Groat

Way to work it, Cru. Thanks for posting, as always.

Sweet coin recovery! :icon_thumleft:

I can only dream of waking up in the morning and saying to my self.....self, let's go hunt the hammered ones !! You are blessed cru !! Fantastic hunt as always...congrats on the hammered one.

I had similar pieces and more round shaped ones. Size and shape match so i think these are scale armour. Just because i have no other explanation. Chin strap decoration of a 20th.C. helmet could be a use for the round ones, but still kind of scale armour.

In 1640, what could I have bought with a half groat?

Great finds. Congrats.

What a great buckle! Like that silver too.

THANKS
This site was littered with bits of scrap copper, I nearly chucked it.
I think I only have 1 other piece of scale armour, with a more rounded edge.

Roughly speaking it was nearly a days pay for 70% of the labour force. So probably brought you bed & breakfast maybe?

Well done on the hunt, liking the buckle it's a great example/shape.
Just looking at the condition of the two Jettons below George and they show the soil kindness.

Awesome finds, love the hammered!

Yeah, shame the best one got hit by the plough.
