🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Hand Punched Thing with Eagle?

Found at 1700s house where I have found Eagle buttons from War of 1812 era, 1830s-40s Dragoon button and Civil War Infantry Button. As with some of the buttons, it's hard to see but I do see some wings outlined in red. Would this have been something hand punched for tack or on a uniform?? I don't see anything on the other side.

Looks like it was punched with a square nail. Old!

I'm thinking some kinda shield/guard plate off a saddle? The eagle denoting union?

Thank you for the reply. That helped me to find "saddle tags" which seem more likely than any other words I could think to google that brought up larger plates/buckles. Still a mystery but at least maybe a ballpark.

I'd guess it is completely handmade starting with a piece of brass, hammered thin or placed on a railway track and run over by a train to flatten and then holes punched with square nails. It will likely be impossible to know what it was used for.
