You guys have always been good to me on this forum so I know this will be a breeze.
It has a ring of very thin and rusty metal around it, whatever it is. I believe it is stone such as marble.
I think I can see a fish in the design. The shape of the holes are quite unusual?
It measures 1.5" in dia. and is not that heavy. The back is smooth.

Handmade local craft piece?
Thanks for looking.

looks like its in Japanese style -with carp /koi depicted on it

my guess would be maybe locally made--for tourist trade(some type of jade?)

no expert by far just a guess

I would have to guess Ivory Or white jade.

There is also a chance it is a Mexican reproduction of a Maya theme. They had a fish god, Chac Uayab Xoc (sp?). Note the pyramid-looking thing near the center.

Chinese - Huang pendant. Jade protects the body. Fish represents happiness.

It is a very lucky piece. Too bad for the one who lost it. Keep it with your MD equipment. I'm sure your finds will improve in quality and quantity.

Could also be soapstone discolored from the ground...
