Hard Drive may be Crashing here

jeff,

It's probably aliens.....time to take out the foil hats....lol...

Sorry it was just to tempting.

Regards + HH

Bill

every time I would move my mouse to do something the screen froze, Boxes popped up,
and everything flashed like I had some major Virus or Power problem.

Now occasionally I'm back to stalls in speed occasionally.

sort of reminds me of TreasureNet when they are running their doohikies in the morning
and I have to wait & wait till they are done.
But being it was on all sites And then the temporary Crash.

It's got to be here

If clogged...
You can use a "duster air can"... OR better yet...
Compressor.
Disconnect everything take into garage and blow the living crap outta it.

In fact... if you are going to do this...
take off side cover and blow entire machine out... including the fan on board...
PARTICUARLY this fan... heat buildup will cause a machine to "break down" ...
run hot etc...

How often do you defragment your hard drive? You need to do that every several weeks. You can set it on automatic if you tend to leave it on overnight. Mine stays on 24/7. Presuming you're on the PC platform, defrag comes included with Windows. I don't know anything about Windows 8 and beyond, so I can't recommend anything there.

Well that's what I've been playing with, also typical cleanup maintenance programs, but it quickly returns. I just can't isolate the culprit, but something is running and resetting itself somewhere?

Side cover is usually the left side...
2 screws or thumb screws... or even just one thumb screw...
sometimes it is a release ...all are dif...
main style is the two Phillips screws...

If you tell me make/model com you are using I can assist you.

it's set up auto defrag.

But I never leave it on overnight

I've left mine on 24/7 for at least the last 20 years. Unless you have an overheating problem, it's easier on the gizmos. Light bulbs can burn 100 years if they're not turned on and off regularly. Hitting the power switch, each time introduces a power surge.

as I said, My Nephew is a Computer Tech

and of course I'm close to Computer Illiterate

so best wait for hands on from him :tongue3:

But Thanks for the Offer

So be it...
But if it just stops and dies...
you will know...
to go ahead and just get your wallet out and ready.

That doesn't sound good. I'd go after that issue myself. Hiren's has plenty maintenance programs, and certainly a far better defrag program. I don't have issues, though I was certainly whacked by a virus several months ago, from where I do not know - but I get a lot of e-mails. Anything I don't know the source is deleted. But most viruses are passed by friends, and I don't do porn. Had to go back 6 months for a Window's restoration - thank heavens for restore points.

As for your issue defragging, there's something on that group of sectors which Windows does not agree with. In my case, with that issue, I'd be using one of the Power defrag programs and see what happens.

When I was popped with the virus recently, I'd been running AVG Free and Zone Alarm for a firewall. Avast came highly recommended as the best in virus detection at the time. So in my restoration, I installed that. I also switched from Internet Explorer a couple years ago into Mozilla Firefox. I.E. is far weaker in the onslaught of viruses everywhere than Firefox. And history? Mozilla was the first quality web browser, and then Microsoft came along with I.E..... Plus the Ghostery add-on to Firefox blocks the bulk of the pop-up kinda drive you crazy from out of nowhere Ads, etc... I.E. won't do that. Riding with I.E. exposes your skivvies to the world....

I use firefox, have AVG, and never open unknown mail, also have an e-mail scan software, don't visit any of these crazy sites. I'm actually pretty protective of where I go online. I did upgrade from 8 to 8.1 but if that is the cause then it took a while to start effecting things. AVG finds no threats, Firefox says it's dandy, and at this point I'm stumped and growing more frustrated. :icon_scratch:

Get a APPLE I Mac...

Every thing is simple & easy if you know how to do it...

Don't sweat it Jeff, I'll take over as Supreme Mod while you are gone..

My Nephew is a Computer Tech, And will definitely get me through this.

At this point I'm up & running with only a few Bog downs since.
I don't think my Fan is running
it is too complicated for me to remove the plate & look,
but I only hear a very light hum with my ear against the tower.
I think My fan was a bit noisy.

Anyway My nephew is supposed to stop up tomorrow If I still need him.
I told him to Call first now that I'm back online.
At this point because of weather I'm hoping I can last till better conditions.

as it is I'm snowed in for the last 2 weeks
& another storm expected tomorrow and Frigid temps predicted till forever :dontknow: ? will probably have me stranded till spring

The processor is the core of the computer and the get very warm, the fan that cools it blows over a heat sink.

Those heatsinks accumulate dirt and dust until they become useless, this eventually leads to processor meltdown.

I take the access cover off my desktop and clean the heatsink and fans every so often, my last PC crashed and I thought it was the drive until I disassembled it.

Then power supply fan is gone... and failure in inedible... be it moments or hours from now...
And your power supply is currently cooking...
You must replace fan immediately... or risk replacing entire power supply....
Do you have an old computer laying around ?

I agree. Check the fan by turning off the computer, put your hand behind the fan in the back by the power supply, and power up. All fans will cycle at bootup. If the fan never blows air at all, accept that by not replacing that fan asap or the whole supply if it's easier,,,you'll smoke your machine quickly.

Lay your hand on top of the case right above the power area. Is is more than mildly warm or is it toasty?
