I have found a few of them and thought they were from harmonicas

Yup. Definitely! Almost every 1850-1950 home site I have ever hunted has at least one of these and an old thimble close by. Both usually within 15 feet of the porch.
 
Sure is... I seem to find so many that I leave them in the piles of "leave behind" stuff at the mining camps.

Lot's of boring nights to fill I imagine back then.

Funny thing is, I found it in the middle of overgrown woods where a road used to be. I have to canvas that area a little more.

Interesting. The other place they turn up a lot is in old hobo camping spots along the railroad tracks. Any old train tracks near there?
 
A Harmonica reed yes, they are common finds in Civil war camps sites.
 
They must have ben some heck of harmonica players back then I find more of them than anything I ever find.
