Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.
I have it, I've read it. You'll get a lot more useful information out of that book than you will the instruction manual, but you should definitely read the instruction manual too. I would probably read the book first though, so it's not so redundant. You can always go back and read the instruction manual to see what Minelab's offical stance is on a particular setting or parameter.
Andy doesn't take too strong of a view on how to set up your detector, but instead prints a bunch of user stories towards the end after explaining what everything does. He reiterates again and again that you need to know how everything works so that YOU can figure out how to set up the detector for your hunting situation.
I just turn it on and go... I'm finding enough stuff to stay happy with that for the moment... plus it's been cold as hell, no time to fiddle with the menus. I WILL be fiddling soon enough though.
One thing I've found out is that just like on the Explorer, in certain situations the manual sensitivity mode will allow your E-Trac to go deeper, even when compared to AUTO +3. And I'm talking 6" vs. 8" ... so it pays to play. "certain situations" are your environment and the ground conditions... my back yard is terrible and the auto +3 runs me down to 19. I can't see a 8" dime when it does this. If I just turn it to manual and set sensitivity to 20, I can hear the dime. 25 makes it a REALLY strong signal... which makes me think it would see a 10" dime easy.
See, lots of room for experimentation. If you don't have one, make a coin garden asap! Do it the right way too... with all that that might entail.
