Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

I ordered it with the Safari I received last week, but the book is apparently on backorder. I am guessing that some of the material will be relevant to the Safari. Will advise after I read it.

Excellent book. It will spell out very clearly the differences between an E-trac and an Explorer.

I have it, I've read it. You'll get a lot more useful information out of that book than you will the instruction manual, but you should definitely read the instruction manual too. I would probably read the book first though, so it's not so redundant. You can always go back and read the instruction manual to see what Minelab's offical stance is on a particular setting or parameter.

Andy doesn't take too strong of a view on how to set up your detector, but instead prints a bunch of user stories towards the end after explaining what everything does. He reiterates again and again that you need to know how everything works so that YOU can figure out how to set up the detector for your hunting situation.

I just turn it on and go... I'm finding enough stuff to stay happy with that for the moment... plus it's been cold as hell, no time to fiddle with the menus. I WILL be fiddling soon enough though.

One thing I've found out is that just like on the Explorer, in certain situations the manual sensitivity mode will allow your E-Trac to go deeper, even when compared to AUTO +3. And I'm talking 6" vs. 8" ... so it pays to play. "certain situations" are your environment and the ground conditions... my back yard is terrible and the auto +3 runs me down to 19. I can't see a 8" dime when it does this. If I just turn it to manual and set sensitivity to 20, I can hear the dime. 25 makes it a REALLY strong signal... which makes me think it would see a 10" dime easy.

See, lots of room for experimentation. If you don't have one, make a coin garden asap! Do it the right way too... with all that that might entail.

I would echo what Brett said. I have the book, and have read it once, working on the second time through. BUT BE WARNED.... part way through it I went and ordered an E-Trac, which arrived yesterday. :D I'm hoping to get out very soon (as soon as the ground thaws)! Andy's book is invaluable - well worth the price. I ordered mine directly from Andy's website. It arrived, autographed, in about four days. Thanks to Andy's book, I feel I have a big jump start on the E-Trac. I know there will still be a steep learning curve, but I feel prepared for it. I can't recommend the book highly enough.

I heard the book isn't worth the $$.

I got Andy's book and I have found it to be worth every cent.

It has taught me some do's and don'ts about the E-trac.

It has informed me on the technology a little better than the instruction manual.

It has given me some ideas on how to set up my E-trac to be the best it can be in the areas that I hunt.

The book is interesting reading and it is more a book on how to and why.

Understanding your machine is half the battle in becoming the best you can be with your chosen machine.

Andy's book does a great job in that regard.

thanks Steve. :read2: ordered it last night from andy's website... i am anxious to get it. i also ordered an e-trac from Ron Shore of Windy City Detectors too. It's true that he is the best to deal with... best deal i found out there... Hands down... Call him if you want a fair shake on what you are looking for... he's also a very nice guy... lol..

The book is very informative. It goes from EXP XS to E Trac. Show comparisons, contrast. What each does. Things about each you won't see in a manual. If you use an EXP you need to read it. Andy is a good writer and Minelab expert.

Where can i find a copy of this book? I checked amazon.com and barnes and noble. They do not have it or carry it.

Looked at Ron's website. I did not see a way to order on line but he has a phone number listed.
(773-774-5445). I did not see the book listed though. On Andy's book site www.sabischbooks.com it is listed for $19.95 ( I think it includes shipping). Check out the KellyCo link above. It can be done on line if that is what you want.

I bought one of these too with my detector and agree with the rest of the comments. A great companion for the Etrac or Explorer.

One complaint though, it is a bit disjointed being a manual for two detectors. I think Andy should sit down and write a book specifically for each machine. There were a few chapters where I was reading about the explorer and the text shifted to the Etrac without any indication. I also like to pick up a book and just flip to a random page and usually get Etrac info when I am looking for Explorer info.

That being said, its a great book and worth the price for the knowledge it presents. :icon_thumright:

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

Wouldn't mind hearing if there is indeed info in the book applicable to Safari users. Thanks.

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

I loaned my 8" coil to a fellow etrac user & in return he let me borrow the "Andy" book... when I spoke to him last, he said he sold his etrac due to not enough time & needed the money..
He said he still had my coil & would ship it to me & to keep the book as he didn't have need of it.
I offered to pay the shipping costs but he shrugged it off as no big deal.

Andys book has some nice little nuggets of info there, cut down the learning curve a bit but I would like to see one more Etrac specific as I've never even held an explorer which is totally different from my limited understanding. I think the info could be applied to the "safari" to an extent as it is an FBS machine too & basically works on the same principles but the book is not "safari" specific so I wouldn't expect too much in that dept...

Hey I got it free! Can't argue with that & made a friend too!

Curious, are they all signed by Mr. Sabisch?

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

If you have an Explorer or E-Trac, Andy's book is a must have unless you want to spend months or years learning what Andy can explain in his book.

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

I am a new E-trac user myself and I think that Minelab would do well to bundle Andy's book with the detector form the start. While the Minelab E-trac manual is useful, to the new user I feel it can be confusing. The E-trac has sooooooo many features that at first it can be mind boggling. I got an E-trac after about a year on an Excal 2, which I think was helpful because it is also a multi-tone multi-frequency Minelab.

With Andy's book, the E-trac emulator, air and/or garden testing, and in the field use one can learn a lot in short order. I just recently starting playing with the E-trac emulator, which is a free download. It allows you to quickly experiment with different settings and lets you see and hear how the E-trac reacts to different targets. Very, very, cool!

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

I've had my Explorer SE for several years and had to take a break from detecting for health reasons. Got the book last week and it is worth the money. Mine is signed. It took 2 mailing days to get to Alabama from Florida. I agree that it should be bundled with either SE and E-Trak.

Re: Has anyone read Andy Sabisch's book on the E-Trac? Thoughts, Impressions.etc.

Went to Andy's site to check on the Etrac book ($19.95 includes shipping to US) and see an announcement for the new "Safari" book.
