Has anyone tried a bigger coil on a BH Elite (Discovery) 2200?

I have a BH Elite 2200, which I understand is the same
as the Radio Shack Discovery 2200.

It has an 8-inch coil and works pretty well, right out of the box.

However, I thought maybe a larger coil would increase the depth of
the targets I could detect. Has anyone found a source of larger coils,
either concentric or others, and tried using one?

Did you get better depth? Did it change the accuracy of the signals
you heard and/or saw on the LCD display? Where did you get the coil
and what did it cost?

Any answers will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Tom,

I see you're an LA guy. I'm down in Long Beach.

I had a BH 3300 as my first "real" detector. I upgraded to the Fisher F-4 which looks a loit like it and uses the same coils but the F-4 was a world of difference. Superior in every aspect: depth, separation, speed. My own personal opinion is that trying to get more depth out of the BH 2200 might not be worth it. I sold my F-4 (about 6 months ago) for $250. It had the DD coil and also the 8".

Thanks for the reply, Joe. I agree that it might not be worth upgrading
the BH Elite 2200 with a larger coil, but I thought maybe someone had
tried it. If so, I'm curious how it worked out.

If I could find an inexpensive 10-11 inch coil for it, and others had found
that such a coil improved their results, I'd probably try it.

I also have a Tesoro Silver uMax detector, which also has an eight-inch coil.
I'm considering the same thing for it -- trying a larger coil to see if I get more
depth.

In both cases, I'm pretty happy with the detector with its stock eight incher.
But everyone always wonders what there is to find just below the point their
detector can reach, right? Me too.

I use the BH Elite 2200 as a backup detector, mostly when my Tesoro Silver uMax
was in the shop. Since the Silver uMax came back, and especially since I also got
the Tesoro 11" widescan coil for it, the Elite 2200 hasn't had much usage.

But while I was using it, I was pretty impressed with the Elite 2200. I was finding
just as many coins with it at the So. California beaches as I was with the Tesoro.

Some simple tests made me think the Silver uMax is a little better at separation
of signals in Discrimination mode than the 2200. But the 2200 gives good
signals and lets me find coins in my sand scoop on the dry sand. I think it's
an excellent detector for the price. I got mine on sale at Big 5 Sporting Goods.
