I agree with Viddy, the more I swing, the more I think people are idiots.

27 years of really dumb questions, people staring like I'm an exhibit at the zoo, the greed and jealously when it comes to their property or property they think is theirs, seeing dog owners let their beasts run everywhere off leash, taking craps on sports fields and not cleaning it up, seeing punks smash public property, people going to nice parks and driving around in circles, showing off their piece of sh*t vehicles, playing loud crappy music and yelling obscenities out the window at detectorists, seeing almost all the green spaces outside the city gobbled up by development and city folks moving out to the country bringing their "city vibe" with them, *****ing and complaining about everything thing, calling the cops on a whim, and the list goes on.......

Yes, I would love to go back in time and live that way. I don't care for the way the North America is heading........Sheep being led to the slaughterhouse!

Y'all can promote the hobby until your hearts content, return every ring and get new people interested. I have my morals but really, I just want to be left alone. Most of the people I encounter while detecting are nothing but a nuisance.

I don't buy the theory of talking to everyone gives you leads to more sites. I've done that for years and all it lead to was wild goose chases and a waste of precious detecting time, entertaining people's dumb questions, listening to their opinions that I could give a rat's azz about, and wondering if I was in front of their boulevard would they be yelling out their door at me, calling the cops!
I have no problem finding places to hunt and only need to be nice if I'm knocking at their door looking for permission. Otherwise they can kiss my........

If there was a "thumbs down" option on this forum, I wonder how many I would get?

Well metal detecting did change me a bit. For example when I wasn't MD and I saw a 1c coin on the gound I wouldn't even bend to pick it up. Now I apprecciate every little coin, considering the effort that we make to find them. Another thing is the history, it has blown up my interess in history and to find out how the city was displaced centuries ago.

Detecting hasn't changed my politics...still hate the Gov't. Think this upcomming election is gonna bury the country...how sad.

Detecting has however changed my perspective of what the colonial soldiers and civil war did for this country. Back in the sticks I feel so much more at ease. I ponder colonial life, how simple life was but how rigorous living was. I find myself constantly scanning the landscapes, imagining what it might have been like and if I was alive back then who and what I'd be and how I would survive.

If anything, detecting has just fueled the fire of my hatred of politicians and corporate greed.

I'm with Jeff...not gonna fight anyones battle but God help you if you step on my feet!

I'm a lot more appreciative of our history because of the research I do to find sites.

Just adding...there does seem to be a connection to us relic hunters and our opinion of modern politics...we knew it was better at one time. History rocks!

It Sure has Johnny,
I was always interested in History and Collecting,
but getting the items from the source, untouched for hundreds of years
is a whole different feeling.
Seeing the handmade buttons and other items cast from whatever scraps were available for the pot,
digging hundreds, maybe thousands of little patches that are all that's left of old cast ironware
rusted away in the saltmud, these insignificant finds mean a lot to me.
It's like you said, things were harder (for the average person), you had to be able to accomplish
a lot on your own and be independent if you wanted to prosper.
Seems like most people today would not be well under these conditions.
I have been putting together the items and skills to be able to maintain a level
of comfort and stability in what I believe are Hard Times Coming.

Interesting thread. Although metal detecting is so new to me that I've yet to dig up anything of historic relevance, I have always had a strong attachment to our heritage. Strong respect for the efforts of our ancestors, and I firmly believe they were at times dreaming of a future where their descendants would continue the tradition of improving this nation.

Sadly, I think we have let them down. Not that most of us are not trying to keep the ship upright, but somewhere along the way we started allowing non-productive people to dictate the course of the ship.

If I could chat with my ancestors right now, I think I'd ask them for advice. I would ask my oldest brother how he summoned up the courage to fly into the flack-filled night sky over Berlin. I'd ask my grandfather what his drive was to be able to hurdle over the barbed wire embankment to attack the enemy in WW1. And most of all I would ask my great grandfather what it was like at Andersonville prison.

Maybe I will ask them in person in a few years. I might have some explaining to do if they ask me what their country is like now.
