Looks like the top of an oil burner light

I know it obivious, but on the bottom (marked 55) the hole would have lined up with the centre. Now squashed flat.

Yeah, it's a automotive thermostat similar to this. Some of the parts are missing from yours. The part that says top is the part that points to the radiator outlet hose (the top hose), also the temperature that it pops open at is normally stamped on it. Not that 55 it should be somewhere around 180 degrees.
