Looks like the top of an oil burner light

I know it obivious, but on the bottom (marked 55) the hole would have lined up with the centre. Now squashed flat.

Seems to say TOP on the top. Agree with the pressurized cap theory.

Yeah, it's a automotive thermostat similar to this. Some of the parts are missing from yours. The part that says top is the part that points to the radiator outlet hose (the top hose), also the temperature that it pops open at is normally stamped on it. Not that 55 it should be somewhere around 180 degrees.

I think it's a cars oil cap.

Its a radiator thermostat, 100% positive on this one.

No doubt about it,it is an automobile cooling system thermostat.I have changed many of them.
