Found this in a creek yesterday in Jefferson County Missouri. Just thought it was an interesting shape then saw the vein of crystals 20210330_150737.jpg 20210330_150922.jpg 20210330_150714.jpg 20210330_150411.jpg 20210330_145615.jpg 20210330_144911.jpg 20210330_150506.jpg 20210330_144700.jpg in it. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Just to be clear... This piece is stone, correct. A fossil? Looks like a vertebra of some kind.

Showing it in your hand gives some idea of the size, but a pic with a ruler or a common object next to the relic is always helpful.

My first thought was the same as Matt, that this may be a piece of a fossilized whale, Mastodon or Wooly Mammoth vertebrae. :icon_scratch:

"Mastodon were shorter and stockier than mammoths with shorter, straighter tusks. Mastodons were wood browsers and their molars have pointed cones specially adapted for eating woody browse. Mammoths were grazers, their molars have flat surfaces for eating grass."

Best of luck to you,
