Have you been denied getting coins from the bank?

Hello all, I am new to hobby and love it. Was given a few coin collector magazines for some packing of glasses and stopped to see some coins that I had previously owned as a child ( I am 40 now). I was immediately hooked and remember seeing your forums as I also prospect and pan for gold.

The reason for my post is I have seen so many posts where fellows hunters have been to the bank and the teller either denies you, or says that they are for themselves. I have a very good friend who is a manager at Bank of America who has ordered me my first full box of halves today and I told her about some of your stories of woe here on the boards. She said that bank policies states that no teller or bank employee may save or deny coin. As an account holder you have first dibs, and only at the close of business can the employee purchase the said coin.

I am new here and just wanted to share this official standing from a bank manager who has been in the banking industry for 26 years. So fellow collectors if you see coins in their till, and you have an account there, you can and should demand the coins. If the manager denies you, then request her superior and get her brought down a peg.

What I've found is that banks dictate their own policy branch to branch. I don't use BOA much anymore because the tellers do filch coins. I've also found it's not worth pressing the issue to the point that I don't want to show my face in that branch anymore.

I completely understand, you get more flies with honey than vinegar.

if a bank denies me, i try in a few weeks later... then a few weeks later, usually after 3 times, it's a pretty solid fact that they don't want anything to do with you... you tell them you are closing your $50,000 account because they couldn't sell you $5 in pennies, and go to the bank down the road. And/or turn them into a dump bank which will soon be heavily dumped upon, afterall, they did not have enough pennies to spare you $5, you might as well drop them off $500 in pennies ;)

i was told at a local bank that i cant get coins anymore . so weeks later i saw one of the bank managers at a bar and she told me they actually had a meeting about me and decided they wouldnt sell me my $500 in halves every two weeks anymore ! so now i use them as a dump bank . They have eight branches within 15 miles of me four of which are on my drive to work and 4 TD banks as well . what i do now is buy a box of whatever coins i have time for while going to work and dump them on my ride to work LOL !

I was denied three times today. And I'm not a large volume CRH at all. I was trying to trade a roll of dimes for two rolls of nickels and two rolls of cents. Three credit unions said I couldn't because I didn't have an account there. Really?? They can't exchange $5 of dimes for nickels and cents?? It was annoying but they were out of the way so it's not like I would go to them frequently anyway.

If you don't have an account then they don't have to do anything for you.

I know they don't but I have only had that problem with credit unions. Banks have always been fine with me.

I assume it is because most banks and credit unions don't want to run the risk that the rolls you bring in are shorted. Considering how often the CWRs I get are shorted, I can understand why.

I had a bank that didn't want to split my $20 into smaller bills. They told me I need an account.

I had a bank order me boxes for about a month before they figured out I didnt have an account with them......

Credit unions may run a tighter ship as they are generally "non-profit".

That is what Im starting to realize. Banks are usually fine in SLC but the credit unions usually ask if I have an account now.

isn't it still free to open an account? Banks used to give away stuff for opening an account. Just open one. put 5 bucks in it if that's all u can spare.

Just once, ordered me 4 boxes of halves twice, and told me she didnt have the room even though I was getting them the same day. I just moved on and thanked her for the orders. Iv since used that banks coin machine to dump my free hunting coins when i go out getting cwr rolls, no problems at all, the head teller is very nice and still remembers me by name.

Got denied dumping 4 boxes once. Well not denied, but they wanted me to pay for the bag, and wait 2-3 days for my account to be credited. Again I just moved on carried my boxes out. I did tell them it hadnt been a problem before...blah blah blah, But i didnt make a big deal about it.

You have 2 choices when you have a problem, move on, or make a big deal about things. Just remember the bank can choose to do business with you or close your account, they dont have to keep your account open.

in my opionion You just gotta pick and choose your battles. Good people skills will help you greatly in this hobby.
