After the recent rain we returned to the hard stoney field to see if we could dig better. We couldn't & only lasted 1 hour. However, Dad got a 1584 Lizzy Hammered Sixpence & a massive Lead Weight. I had very little - a circa 1900 Primrose League Badge & a crappy tin halfpenny.

We then moved to a freshly seeded (sweetcorn) Game Strip - future bird cover. After 10 minutes Dad got his 2nd hammered - Scottish cut half. The pressure was on. It wasn't until the last 30 minutes of our 2 hour hunt that I got a scrappy Roman Silver & I fluked out a hammered on the way back to the car. 2 silvers each:headbang: Good 3 hour hunt!

Lead Token
16th C Thimble
3 Scrappies
Maximinus I AD235 Silver Denarius
Lizzy Sixpence 1584
Charles I Penny
William the Lion (Scottish) Cut halfpenny - cut in the Edingburgh mint prior to issue. Post 1214 postumous issue coin.

Four silvers in one day... Not bad... Too bad that the quality of roman silver decreased rapid. Like the penny, a real beauty!

Nice finds but the best part is you were out with your Dad CRUSADER.

man to even be able to find things that old would be spectacular here in michigan we are luck to find 1800's or the rare 1700's

As usual, you have really impressed me. You guys get some awesome finds.

Close to a 2000 year span in your coinage finds. Amazing.

Not too shabby at all for the finds department, 4 silvers in three hours is very nice results.

Not bad at all ! I like how easily you can see the Liz and the 1584 - very nice !

Amazing finds Crusader! As usual, us Americans are drooling! If I saw a 1584 in the dirt.... HH!

3 Scrappies

Hey CRUSADER,

I've been meaning to ask you, what means this "Scrappies?" You always seem to find some. Sorry to be un-hip to this jive.

Maybe it's in reference to the coins condition (bad)?

Most people call poor quality Roman Bronze Coins 'grots' we gave them the pet name 'scrappy' instead. So its just our preferred name for an almost blank Roman Bronze Coin. We do seem to average about 1 every hour, mostly because we like Roman areas.

Wow! great hunt. The Lizzie and other silvers make it a special day on hard ground. Well dug! Hot bath!

for fertilizer the coins wear out ...... Cru sites and find these coins by thousands .... but also find good coins
