That's a cool story. I've worked with and known a few small town newspapers editors and increased circulation was their goal. In the old days if they came across a story like this they were glad to reprint it, and not above creating such stories on their own. Makes people buy the paper. Of course the folks I knew weren't that way, haha! I would buy that paper to read that.
