I think it is this coin but the only question is real or replica: Either way amazing find! American Post-Colonial New Jersey Coinage 1787 New Jersey Copper Replica Coin Outlined Shield Variety In 1786 Thomas Goadsby, Albion Cox, and Walter Mould were granted authority by the New Jersey colonial legislature to strike coins for the state. The original copy coin that this was copied from had a die crack across the shield. Obverse: Horse’s head with plow and the legend NOVA CAESAREA (New Jersey), 1787 Reverse: United States shield and legend E PLURIBUS UNUM (One Composed of Many) Diameter: 24 mm Copper plated lead free fine pewter.
By the way, Welcome to TNet!
After close examination I do believe yours is not a replica. Notice the "COPY" Stamped on the replica I posted.
As Ticm stated your should post this on Today's Finds with the story.
WOW! I hope it is real! The New Jersey colonial nickel was first minted in the 1780s. It was the first coin in the United States to make use of the phrase "E Pluribus Unum." Nova Caesarea is the latin name for New Jorsie. Breezie
Man! I hope that sucker is the real deal.........The letters on the reverse don't line up like any in my red book, Maybe an unknown varity
I raised the mag. on the picture and I swear the date looks to read 1728 Whats up with that? ........Sure hope it turns out to be the real deal.................HH
Pretty sure I have a NJ copper myself found in BC but almost completely wiped smooth. I can make out the shield and maybe some of the front but not clear enough to be sure. Is yours the real deal?
I missed this one too, but you are correct on the identification of it being a 1788 Maris 67-v variety.
I have added this coin to the NJ distribution survey and your M.67-v is the seventh ground found reported in my survey. it is the most common 1788 minted, but I still need to find that variety for my collection. Congrats on getting your first NJ copper.
If anybody else has found a NJ copper and I did not get to help ID the variety if possible, please contact me. Along with state and county found in for my distribution survey. Trying to reach 500 ground found NJ coppers before I publish the data, getting real close to that goal.
