You have another newbie to deal with here :-). I grew up on a crop farm in the middle of Nebraska in the late 70's and early 80's and have always been infatuated with finding stuff lying around and in old buildings especially on the farm, you NEVER know what you'll find!!!!!. Collecting has always been in my blood and the hardest thing for me is deciding what to keep and what's actually trash. I am still the same to this day and now, 30+ years later, I'm wanting to try this hobby out. I picked up a Fisher F5 last summer and tinkered with it a little bit around the local parks in a little suburb town of Omaha where I live now. Haven't had much luck except for some old hot wheels buried in sand in a park and a few newer coins. My kids like to help dig my targets. I give them a spot and they go to work with shovels and a pinpointer. Hopefully with some experience they will get the fever too and can make it a family hobby. I still have connections to my old farm town and there are quite a few abandoned farm houses out there I would like to poke around, but I need to sharpen my skills before heading to those places so I'm not wasting my time and passing over things because of my inexperience. I'm still trying to figure out my machine and would like to find someone around the Omaha area who would like to show a greenhorn the ropes.

I'm really only interested in coins and relics and there isn't any gold in Nebraska, that I'm aware of.

If anyone has any tips/tricks on getting to know my machine.....I'm all ears!!!! I can't seem to really find much on the Fisher F5 how to's... I only have the stock coil on my F5, so would an upgrade to a different coil on it be advisable? Also thinking about an AT pro to add so my wife can join in the hunt, any thoughts on the AT Pro or would the Gold be the way to go?

I love this site with everyone's finds and stories, I can only imagine what's out there waiting for me to find so I can share with all of you. Im looking forward to the future of this new hobby and spending time outside with my fam and any new friends I may acquire thru MD'ing

And if you haven't figured it out by my handle, I'm a HUGE Nebraska Cornhusker football fan and collector for 37 years now. So if any of you like to talk college football, message me, I would love to hear from you!!!

Happy huntings!

HI Beepin Husker; Welcome to our World. You and your kids are about to explore and see things the avg. person never sees ok. Nebraska has a lot of history and GOLD as well. Nebraska's history goes back before the 1700's and it became a State in 1854. The best places to hunt for coins are old settlements but especially old farm fields that have just been plowed. That is when I make my best finds. Heck, I even have walked right behind the plow literally. Try it. You'll be amazed ok. Coin Book to buy is the R.S. Yeoman Guide to United States Coins called the Red Book ok. It is basically the Bible of coins here. It costs about $18. You can get it online ok. GET IT. !! You will need it ok.
I'll do some fast research to help you get started on productive sites ok. Let's start on "What town are you from specifically."??
If I know that address You will fall over with the info I can provide yu ok. Just PM me with it ok. Good Hunting. PEACE:RONB

Sound a lot like me. Fellow football nut and newbie to the treasure hunting biz. Good Luck

Welcome aboard. Those old farm houses sound like the ideal place to sharpen you skills. Remember that you can always go back for a second look later, so you won't actually be losing something if you miss it on the first pass. If I can help you, just PM me. I love to hunt treasure, go metal detecting and talk about both!

Welcome from Birmingham, Alabama. This is a great place to learn about and share safe, effective treasure hunting tips and tricks. Good luck and we look forward to seeing your cool finds.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I'm just waiting for the ground to thaw a little here in Ne, then my contributions to the "today's finds" page will be coming.
