Just wanted to say Hello after registering today. But I also have to put out a big "Thank You" to TreasureNet and the folks on the site.
I've been wanting to get involved in the hobby for a while and really don't know much about it. A friend of a friend gave me what I think was some good advice, and that was not to bother with buying a crappy detector just as a 'starter'. He said I'd get easily discouraged and wouldn't get a true feel for the hobby if it was nothing but empty pockets and frustrations.
So, with that advice and some help from Google, I started doing some reading. And while I believe in reading reviews on sites that are selling products, I think that the best information comes from those folks without any financial interest in the matter. For that reason I think these forums are just great. So I've spent a lot of time reading your opinions, admiring your finds, and looking for what I thought was the "right" deal for me. So while not everyone will agree with my decision, I still appreciate the discussions and TreasureNet for providing the forum.
I'm in central FL and hope to do some detecting at the beach so I opted to go with the Tesoro Sand Shark. I ended up picking up an older unit with the detachable coil for what I felt was a fair price. (Again, after reading through here..) It has the 8" coil and I've spent the past few days building a straight shaft for it. I've still yet to pick up a good scoop, but hopefully that's not too far off and then all I have to find is time to hit the beach.
Thanks again for all the info.
