You might consider browsing Sub-Forums: California for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.

I haven't yet as I don't have a MD. I am currently researching them and seeing what will work best for me and my wallet

Tell us what kind of detecting you plan on doing and what your budget is. We'll give you all kinds of advice.....whether you want it or not! :laughing7:

That's why I am here. And sense i don't have any feelings...none will get hurt.

I haven't bought a unit yet. I am still researching. It seems to me the best ones are the ones that people use. Opinions are varied and strong. I haven't found an objective measurement yet.

Yup, kinda like buying a car. You have avid brand name guys whether the actual vehicle is better or not. Your best bet is to find someone hunting your same area for the same type targets to tell you honestly what works best. Good luck there! We're all trying to find the perfect machine for all types of hunting. So far, that machine doesn't exist. The best you can hope for here is a list of candidates that you can choose from depending on your needs and pocketbook. As a first time buyer, I would choose something fairly easy to learn and a name brand so accessories and repairs are readily available.

At 40 years old, and a fairly average intelligence guy, I think I am just going to try to buy the metal detector that I think would best suit my needs from the get-go.
I think it was asked here what type of detecting I was planning on doing. I don't think I answered that. My desire is mainly relic hunting. I live in Riverside County, so there are plenty of places out there in the desert to do that. However, I work in the ocean so I would not mind doing some hunting there as well. It would be nice if I found some coins to help pay for the addiction, but that is not my main objective. I would like to hunt on property where there are old homesteads. As a photographer I have visited besides quite often and found them to be very beautiful. I have also found them to be very trashy. It seems to me the best course of action would be to get a detector that would be able (As much as possible) To discriminate fairly well.
I have been considering the AT Pro. Do you think that would be sufficient for my needs?

Also, are there any good books, such as metal detecting for dummies, that would help me understand the more technical aspects of this?

The Garrett AT Pro is a good all around detector for the price. It's a good relic machine, loves coins and jewelry, and is waterproof to 10 feet. We have some great packages on them until the end of August.

There are much better machines for the ocean but it's a pretty good all around machine for the price. The CTX3030 would be a better choice but it comes at a much higher price. Sometimes getting two (or more) machines is a better option. You can get ones optimized to finding certain targets.

Most of my detecting would not be in the ocean and I will be hunting relics mostly so it sounds perfect.

Welcome from SoCal, HH !!!!!!!!!
