Hi there! I'm new to this site and beginner gold panner in Northern California. I've been going out every weekend this summer, panning along the Trinity River. I'm interested in talking and learning about our local area, and fascinated in trying to understand the geology of it all. I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, so if anyone has any cool resources to share, that would be awesome! I'm also just learning to navigate this site, so if anyone can point me in the direction of groups for gold panning & geology of the area, please let me know.

Areas of interest:
Trinity River
Klamath River
New River
Six Rivers National Forest
Trinity Alps
Del Norte County
Humboldt County
Trinity County
Siskiyou County

Thanks everyone!

Welcome. I knew a guy that did well on the Trinity river. Large flat nuggets were common. Gov. Arnold did away with using any type of dreager for moving over burdon. I always like those little cracks. Try a large pry bar and then a hack saw blade to get in there.
Good luck,
Tom

Hi Tom! Thanks for your response! I haven't found anything close to a nugget, but definitely flat flakes. I've been able to pry some cracks open with the prybar, but what would you use the hacksaw blade for? I have trouble getting to the bottom of the cracks - I'm able to get some of the sand (that's where the flakes are) but I think I need some sort of 'sucker-upper' (handheld, not motorized of course) to really get in there. Have been looking at videos and maybe should try to make the pvc pipe situation with the gasket in it? I'm not sure of the best way to get in there deeper than my little scooper allows.

Geology of the Klamath mtns

Welcome! I’m out hear in Trinity as well. I know a lot about the geology of the Klamath mountains and trinity. I also have a few books we can go over together. There is a lot to explain because trinity has several types of gold deposits. Let me know if you’re interested?
