:metaldetector: :hello: Bought my first metal detector (Garrett AT Pro). My wife and I thought we would take a different kind of vacation this year and go treasure hunting at the beach. I decided to practice with it in my back yard.
My first find was a mercury dime (1944) and two wheaties (1910, 1916). Needless to say, I got excited!
living in Petersburg,VA, where one third of the Civil War was fought, I was hoping to find some relics. I DID!!
In the first hour of ever using a metal detector, I found a button cover, 3 bullets, and 2 live cannon balls! 20 feet from my back door!!
Can't wait to get to the beach and see what we find.
Happy Hunting Everyone.:icon_thumright:

Congrats! I, too, purchased the ATP as my 1st machine, and I like it a lot, even though I haven't used it as much as I would like just yet. I took mine to a couple beaches and had some success with it but you have to make sure to ground balance it as best you can... otherwise you'll be pretty frustrated. Even though I found a handful of pocket change with mine I'm still not sure I had it operating at peak efficiency on the salty sand, and I feel as though I probably missed more than I would like to admit. As you will hear from others, the ATP isn't an ideal machine for salt-water beaches, but you can still get use out of it if you set it up as well as it will allow.

Check out the Garrett website and YouTube for some really interesting & informative vids on using the ATP on salty beaches and in the salt water.

Good luck!

Thank You. May your hunts be prosperous.

ahhh Dupont!! the good ole days!

Wilcome.webpCongrats on great first finds. The AT Pro isn't a good beach detector as it has one frequency so it will chatter in the wet sand because of the salt. You may quiet it down some by lowering sens. It will work well in the dry sand. Good Luck.:occasion14:

I have a poster of you in your younger years with AJ Foyt in my garage... Will you be here even more now that you're retiring or are you just trying to beat Richard Pettys record for retiring the most times ?
