Is there anyone here in Michigan that will take me along on a Morrel hunt. I would like to get out and find some mushrooms for my wife. I just don't know of any good places to go to. I thought if I could find someone to take me along I could surprise here with some. I could bring me detect with me and we could MD and hunt mushroom or do both. I would be williing to make a day out of it or even a week end. I can do it this coming week end or the next. Email me if you don't mine a tag along....Matt

They are all over your area right now and just getting going in southern Michigan, I think a week or two in the north. I hope you find someone to take you around.

This link will at least let you see where they are in case you try later in the season. I know nothing about the sites memberships or anything they are selling, but the map is free and pretty accurate.

Tomas, thanks for the map. Good luck Matt, morels can be right in your own backyard!
One year, I looked everywhere, no luck, (found some stems from someone else's pluckings).
Then, as I would have least expected, I found a bunch of small black ones, then a LARGE patch of whites, 75 feet from my backyard tree stand. FFD

Just get out there and start looking. You will find some eventually. I found about 30 today after a few hours of searching. They are pretty small only two days old.

Here is another good site. Looks like they are popping up down there.

After this warm weather we had they should be popping here too. I thought about going out today, never got around to it.

How can you tell how old they are?

Getting ready to start hunting here in Atlanta. Gotta get a colonostophy out of the way first. 2003 was our best year, my wife and I picked over 60 pounds. Have not had a year that good again, but we still have lots of bags in the freezer.

Well I was out this week end and so far ZERO in the mushroom here in the NW of OH for me. The most I have every found is like 12 at one outing. When my in laws was alive they would go to MI and bring back pounds of them. So I thought maybe someone would take me out to find some for my wife this coming week end. As I have no idea as where to go in MI. As I would never tresspass on someone property. But that is OK as I know people do not want to give out the spots where they find them...Matt

I know they are only 2 days old because I checked the same spot 2 days ago and they were not there. Morels will usually come up in the same spot year after year so I knew they would pop up eventually just had to keep checking. Just make sure that you cut them at the base and not pull them out of the ground and they will probably be back the next year. That is a big reason why when people find spots they do not let anyone know about them. Happy hunting.

find a map that shows state land, even state or county parks. There are a few Morrels around my place but not enough to drive from Ohio for I like to find them but don't eat them.

Make sure you carry the 'shrooms out of the woods in an onion sack or something similar, the spores will be released from the fungus as you leave the woods, and will ensure future crop. Look for morels where there has been a recent burn or disturbance in the woods.

Look around areas that have Elm and Apple trees in close proximity.
I think it's still too early, but that hot weather earlier this week might get them going.

My neighbors hunt the local golf courses, only in the O/B areas though, with good success.

Have ya found any yet matt? Im not to far away from ya so, I can come and sample them for ya! ;D you know.....make sure they are good! ;D

Still have not found any morrels around here yet. It has turn colder so I don't know if that is it. It has been raining all day today. and it is calling for the high to be only in the 60's and cloudy. Maybe I will try again this week end....Matt

None found here yet either, but it has been very cold at night the last two weeks. We had snow just a week and a half ago. I am headed out this afternoon with my dad to look for some morels and to MD.
I will let you know if we do any good.

I know a ldy in Jackson that just started finding them behind their house. Everything is late this year.

I have checked one off my better spots every other day all this week, in the northern lower, finding nadda. Yesterday I found about 12 false morels so they should be along any day now. I did hear of a few in the Grayling area north of me. There is a motel there that will give you tips on locations if you want to try there this week or next week end after our midweek expected rain.

I am finding a few here in Midland Mi, I think if you can not find them in northern Ohio you need to find a different spot.

None found today. I did find my first "beefsteak" though, so they are close to popping.

I am up to about 130 picked so far, all but 2 from the same spot. Still more waiting to get bigger. Seems like a pretty good year for them with all the moisture in the ground. Good luck everyone.
