Help Identify Canteen

I found this at Value Village for $10.00.

This is what I know:

- After long observations, I have come to the conclusion that the "face" on the front is actually a Seraphim – the highest ranking angel, hence the halo and six wings.
- I believe it is made of Brass.
- There is some sort of a cross on the back.
- There is a chain to carry it by that has a smaller chain attached to the lid.
- It does not leak. Is it a water canteen? A wine canteen? A gunpowder flask?

It doesn't look terribly old to me. Maybe some pictures of the filler neck and stopper? That would tell a lot!
