Help identify

I found these two metal o-ring like objects at a mid to late 1700’s dig site. I have found over 30 buttons and 6 coppers, along with other odds and ends but have no idea what these might be.

There is a possibablity they are (jewelry)rings.
Can you tell us what metal they are?
and maybe a closeup pic

Not sure of the metal unless you can suggest ways of finding out. The second pic is of the stuff I have found there along with it, hope that helps.

I find them also. Still no solid ID.
Before some says it. There not compression rings for spark plug.

are they magnetic?

They look brass or bronze so I'm still thinking Jewelery

Early spark plug Rings

Not everything on a 1700's Site will be from the 1700,s
unless the site has been in a Vacuum for 300 Years.

sorry ! my uneducated opinion

But I do find allot of Them, & That was what I was originally told they were.

I hunt allot of picnic groves and ball parks, not from the 1700's

The site WAS in a vacuum seal, [emoji38] I found all of this within 100 sq ft area. Plug rings or copper gasket was my first thought when I pulled them out of the dirt but it just doesn't fit in with the elements of the site. Thank you for your suggestions though.

Also, back in the day, 18th century day that is, brass rings like that had thread woven through these like spokes in a wheel. They were used to hang curtains.

I just find it hard to believe that out of the fifty or so items I found in such a small area, all be 18th century except for those two rings.

We call them 'Ring Things' we find them everywhere. Had 2 today. Some of ours go back the the Roman period, but most are Medieval / Post Medieval. They had turns of uses including horse harness rings & suspension loops on the persons belt etc... Some where thought to be the basis of a cloth button in the 18th C.

Sometimes called 'Dorset buttons' - made from the early 17th C to mid 19th. Buttons made by weaving yarn or thread around a metal ring.



You can still find supplies and instruction for making them today.
