need help identifying confederate droop wing button~ 16 mm ~ no back mark ~ no stars ~ cannot find it in any of the button books

There is a very similar button on page 201 in Tice's book. But, the caption reads "Probably a French Button of the Second Empire". That empire existed between 1852 and 1870 so it is possible that buttons made their way to the Confederacy.

Agreed, looks French to me.
