A recent find at a local cellar - nice old pickaxe dug near a cellar that dates back over a hundred years. I cleaned it up a bit an noticed a nice circular maker's stamp that I don't recognize - B in a circle - looks like sons above. Any help identifying it would be appreciated. The pick axe is 18" long and the bottom of the eye is about 3" X 1 5/8". The handle was long gone but that bit spike shaped piece was right in the center of the eye trapped in soil. I have never seen anyone wedge a pick axe like that.

Thanks for the help - have learned a lot about the Broad family since reading your post. Elisha Broad was born in Mass. but lived in New Brunswick for 48 years. E. Broad & Sons operated for 12 years from 1883-1895. Elisha's obiturary in 1895 noted that he started an edge tool company at St. John in 1844. In 1866 he bought the Douglas Axe Manufacturing Company. E. Broad & Sons was also known as the St. Stephen Edge Tool Company. They were known for their shipwright's tools and also made mining picks. The company was taken over by Mann in 1900 and became known as the Maritime Edge Tool Company. Thanks to Treasurenet we now know a little more about the cellar up the road from our home here in Nova Scotia.
