Hello,

My brother recently purchased a short sword and we have tried to research it on the internet but have come up with nothing on this sword.

It is marked A&A.S on one side of the blade near the guard and on the other side it has what looks like a S and an A. The handle looks to be a one piece cast. The blade measures 22-1/2" long.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can We See A Pic Of The End Of The Hilt And The Belt Attachment On The Scabbard ? I Think That It May Be Mexican And If It Has An Opening In The Hilt It May Be A Modification of A Sword Bayonet. trk5capt...

I will attach a couple of photos below. The belt attachment is long gone on the scabbard.

Does the handguard shown have any markings that might have been missed? Or any marks on the scabbard itself? I know I've seen that mark before. 1st thought was Ames Sword Co. but they usually use N.A. Co. and town.

There are no other markings on the sword or scabbard that I can find. But I will keep looking over it just to make sure I have not missed anything.

Hi all,

I second the idea of the sword being a bayonet with a replacement sometime of the hilt. My dad had a bayonet marked as being from the Franco-Prussian war era, 1871 I think. The pattern and proportions look virtually identical.

Cheers,

Steve

Just a couple ideas...

The A.&A.S. could stand for August & Albert Schnitzler of Solingen, Germany. According to Bezdek's German Swords and Sword Makers, the company was in business from 1864-1873. They had offices in Birmingham, England from 1864-1873, and sold cavalry sabers to northern dealers during the American Civil War, 1864-1865 (years they sold to northern dealers, not the years of the war :P).

The blade looks like a turkish model 1874 bayonet. Check out the photo. Maybe a turkish sword. The blade length is the same also.

Any idea on composition?
