A few weeks back I found this button back, 8 inches deep, in Cartersville, Ga in an area I've previously hunted and have found countless other Civil War relics. After cleaning it up and trying to make out the letters, I can confidently say on the outer edge it is marked "Scovilles & Co" Below that it is marked "Extra". I've run into finding other buttons with the same markings but with the Extra being replaced with Waterbury. I did some research and the only buttons I could find that matched the wording were US Army Civil War Engineer Cuff Buttons. I am just asking for confirmation and knowledge about this type of button as what I did find was limited to one or two auctions. This button also measured in at about 1.3 mm.

Here's a link to harry Ridgeway's site and your button backmark. Scroll down almost to the bottom of the page. I glanced through some of my reference books and couldn't find that exact backmark on any other buttons. But, I did not do a thorough search.

One reference work states that the "Scovills and Co." backmark was used between 1840 and 50. So the button was probably lost during the CW.

Thank you, for the links to the references of buttons. I found the exact button back about halfway down and now have a little more info on what it was.
