HELP! My 1999 White's XLT won't turn on. I found my GURU!

I used my White's XLT detector a few times this year, then it got too brutal outside. Then my medical problems started taking over my life. Now I'm recovering and need to go looking for stuff again. I never store it with batteries inside. I put in brand new batteries then I pushed the on button and the screen flickered and turned off. It wasn't even a full second, just a flash and gone.

I tried and tried, checked the batteries, 12.45 volts from 8 AAs. Nominal operating voltage is 12 volts. I checked the machine's battery contacts, which I have found sometimes bend if the battery pack slides in too forcefully. Since I found that out years ago, I have been especially careful to never do that. They look good and are making solid contact. They aren't corroded and have no cold soldered joints. I took the cover off to see if any caps blew or were leaking. I can't see anything wrong.

I tried pushing buttons in combinations why pushing the power button. I made sure the all metal/pinpoint switch is off, nothing works.

I called Garrett's, who purchased White's. They gave me a company that repairs White's but I can't get a reply to my voicemail and emails.

Any ideas?

It's possible the screen died, try powering it up again and see if it makes any noise if you pass the coil over some metal.

I got back in contact with my friend David at Central Ok Metal Detecting Club and he put me in touch with a metal detecting dealer in Texas. He told me there is a guy in Oregon who still repairs the old White's detectors! He gave me his email and phone number. I emailed him nd he called me just now! He's a former White's service tech of 28 years, so I think he knows what he's doing.

Send it to him with $80 labor and $25 shipping plus parts! Cheaper than a used one on ebay!
