Hello, I am new here. I have been an avid relic hunter for many years. I recently sold my Confederate button collection (all dug in Texas by me) and used the money to buy a Prius. Now I decided to take a trip in the new car and I am going to a friend's gold claim near Superior, AZ. I am trying to cover as many bases as possible in case the area we are going does not 'pan out'...pun intended. Are there any places in eastern AZ or southwestern New Mexico that we can fall back on that we might be able to go panning or nugget detecting? I was told about the Bear Creek area north of Pinos Alto, NM and the Big Burro area too. Any help will be greatly appreciated. We are not going with any great expectations but would be very happy if we could have a chance to find a tiny flake of gold somewhere. Can anyone help out a couple of rank amateurs in need of a little guidance?

Thanks a bunch,
Chris from Texas

Join a club! GPAA - whatever. That way you'll have thousands of acres to prospect, and won't be claim jumping. Good Luck!

in new mexico... Tijeras in tijeras canyon, and up north in red river! for panning... bear creek in red river has no claims and is great during the summer.

You have me pretty curious Dusted! I thought all the good gold in Tijeras was on the wrong side of the Kirtland fence. I drive through the canyon twice a day every day and am always looking at the different materials in the notches where I-40 was cut through the mountain. It's all I can do to not stop and sample the dirt in those little V's! One of these days I will.
I samples material off 502 going up to Los Alamos and got a couple flakes of gold and about a dozen real small garnets that are blood red.
Have pulled some nice pieces out of the San Pedros.
What do you know about Tijeras? c'mon....spill the beans.

Where is San Pedros? And let us know if you find anything in Tijeras!
