Hi ,
This was found inside the wall of an old home.
I have never seen anything like it and neither have the 2 antique dealers I have asked.
Appears to be heavy oxidized wood bottom with sandstone cover.
Any help on identification or age would be awesome!!!
there appears to be a small copper ring around top

approx size 6" x 7"

Thanks!!!

Never encountered anything like that either. Very cool item, can't wait till someone can positively identify it.w

I know this is a tough one!!
I think it has age the crack on the outside has much interior oxidation.
Fingers crossed someone has a clue

Don't have a clue but it's cool that you found it in a wall! :icon_thumright:

Insulator for a bottle of wine brought from a cool cellar.

Those are early 19th century wine jugs

Hi,
The interior dimension is about 2” x 4” closed which indicates that this “thermos” would hold approximately one glass of wine and keep it cool.
I’m guessing the missing insert would be custom made bottle unique to the piece?
Any Idea of age on this piece?

Thanks very much!

Are you sure the top is stone? From the pics it almost looks like carved burl. I've seen burl wood jugs before but never anything like yours..... Might be a job for antiques roadshow....

In the 3rd pic the stone appears to be translucent. Probably not sandstone if thats the case. Maybe soapstone?

That is really cool! [emoji106]
