I recently dug this rifles butt plate near City Point Virginia/Hopewell, at first I thought it was from an 1853 Enfield as it has the right screw holes but after examining it, something about it looks different. Anyone able to help me out with a proper identification? It is not stamped or engraved. Thanks in advance for any assistance. BP1.jpg BP2.jpg BP3.jpg BP4.jpg

Hi WR,
I found two buttplates one with a date 1917 , the other doesn't have one, my thoughts are that a fire destroyed a WW1 tent as there was much evidence of burning, many buttons and buckles
found also but not the rest of the rifles.....HH....Bonz IMG_3257.JPG IMG_3258.JPG IMG_3259.JPG IMG_3222.JPG

It looks like an Enfield to me. I have one I dug and looks like mine, although I don't know the measurements. Really nice that the screws were there. That means the stock rotted away. I would be searching everywhere there, could be more if nearby.
