Help with ID

Here is another I could use some help with, I found this last week in an old ghost town that is long gone it only existed for a few years in the 1890s and nothing I have found there is modern. Any ideas on what this is? it is brass and measures appx. .5 " x 2" x .25" thick . I thought maybe it was part of a rifle receiver that attaches to the stock ? it is brass but has an iron attachment on the bottom also where it is broken is a threaded hole and has a number probably part of a serial number .

Thanks that is very helpful it gives me a good place to start . It looks like an iron strip is pinned to it . The only spent cartridges I found near it were 5 x .45-70 s and 5 x .30 USC (later 30 kraag) .

Thanks for the help , I looked into squeezebox reeds and all the ones I saw looked sort of similar except all of them seem to have a hollowed out area which this does not have. I also looked into trigger guard tangs and I really think that is what this is , I just cant find an exact match . These are both very good guesses , I hope maybe someone that is an expert in older firearms can weigh in and see if there is a match for the trigger guard tang , or a squeezebox reed or anything else it might be for that matter. Like I said earlier all the stuff I found from here appears to be from no later than the 1890s era so maybe that can narrow it down a little.

My first thought was a broken off tang. But it looks like it had a spring attached to it, or something else iron. So to me that rules out the tang.

Very cool find! It appears to be a section of lower receiver tang from a Model 1860 Henry rifle. The spot where it broke is where the lever hook goes and the steel piece is the lever hook spring. Another possibility is the Model 1866 Winchester which borrowed part of its design from the Henry rifle. Hope you can find the rest of it!

Now that I look close, I believe it is the bottom tang from a rifle receiver as mentioned above. Could be a Henry or 1866 Winchester, or any number of makers. That's probably the remains of a trigger spring attached.

I refinished an old 30-30 and It looks like the lower receiver although my 30-30 isn't brass the piece resembles mine.

Thanks for the help with this everyone. The sight idea is good but the metal strip is on the opposite side so I dont think that is what it is . I am going with the 1800s lever action trigger guard/ receiver tang as mentioned seems to be a match. Now I will just have to find the exact rifle , there are a few museums here with pretty good old rifle collections I can look at and maybe get lucky and find a match.
