Welcome to Tnet.

Nice. It is indeed Merkelbach & Wick of Grenzhausen, founded in 1872 in the town in the Westerwald. It may have been brough back from Germany after WWII (or WWI depending on your grandfather's service) but, if after WWII, it already had a bit of age to it. Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II and Georg Peter Wick ended their partnership in 1921 and the company then operated under the name of Wick-Werke AG until 1984.

They did make beer steins (with handles and usually lidded) but vessels in this form are usually regarded as cups or beakers for wine and other beverages.
