Help with repairs on Vibra Probe 560

My beloved Vibra probe is acting erratically and the manufacturer does not repair this model any longer.
It isn't the battery.
It alerts on metal, but then it alerts often for no reason.
Any suggestions?

I had one once that did that turns out moisture had gotten in and shorted the circuit. At the time they repaired it, today I'd say it's toast.
