Found this last Saturday in Putnam County Ga. Also found three nice hand axes in same area. When I got it home and cleaned it off it had a triangular shelf about 1 to 2 inches below the the top.The bottom is smooth as you can see how it sits up straight. I had no idea what the triangular shelf was for, however when I started holding it in different ways it was apparent that when held from the top the shelf was perfect and necessary to hold it.two fingers fit right in it and without the shelf it would be almost impossible to be a affective manos or the like. Any comments would be welcomed....Carl

Could be natural. If I found it I would guess a grinder by the flat sides of it. I got some ugly ones that are grinders but don't show them.
Now lets see the others you found.

There was probably once a crystal in there.

Hand axes? 1-6 ,7-11 and 12-14

Probably not, sorry. I have found that NA Indians didn't live at every spot. One creek I hunt has pottery and stone after every rain. The other creek which is only .25 mile away has almost nothing in it. A little but not much at all. Not worth my time to walk it and it looks great. The nothing creek has so much flint in it that is natural its crazy but the artifacts are so scarce. You would of thought they would be laying every place but they aren't. Good luck and look for another spot, rock

Geofacts. But Putnam county has artifacts.

Tn mountains, what exactly is a geofact,I understand that lots of rocks do form in shapes that are not that common in nature,I went to the Tennessee Kentucky border near the tunnel underCumberland Mt. There I saw layered stone the could and would break in perfect squares and rectangles, etc. I find a lot of these triangular shaped stones but I only keep the ones that somehow have been modified in every spot needed to make the stone comfortable to hold in your hand for both right handed and left handed people as needed. The one with "finger groove" on it would be almost impossible to hold and beat on anything without that groove for finger. All of the others have been modified ,removing any part that interferes with almost perfect shape to fit the hand. It is evident to me that Native Americans we very interested in their tools being ergonomicaly correct tools, intended to maximize productivity by reducing operator fatigue and discomfort. Not lobbying for these pieces be thing they are not but I do find it hard to come to grips with the thought that these rocks naturally removed all the things that interfered with good comfortable grip.or a groove to protect fingers.

I do not think all stone tools were hafted.

They did have hand axes no doubt. Digging tools for roots held in the hand, choppers also and scrapers. But the material you are showing is not likely of been used. Being as we are actually looking in the fields and creeks you will know certain types of rock were avoided due to them not holding up under pressure. The rocks you have found would not hold up. They would not of picked it to use. If there is no other material then they would have to use it but being near TN and Kentucky they would of had plenty of flint and better quartz. Those pieces look to be naturally formed in those shapes. Not trying to hurt your feelings but they aren't worked by man.

Rock,,this is hobby and I assure you haven't hurt my feelings ,everyone's opinion is appreciated,I have just started looking for larger stone tools so I am sure I will make many more mistakes, that's why I ask you guys and hopefully I want from what I learn I won't repeat past mistakes. How bout this one ? have a good evening,Carl

Rock , one more thing all of these rocks were found in Middle Georgia,Putnam County, just about on the south end of the Piedmont region and Northern end of Coastal Plane,on The Fall LIne,got lots of quartz,,,I had just mentioned TN /Ky because I saw some natural stone that could break on it's on into a perfect square, I can suture you you won't be stumbling over stones that look like a slice of pie around here, all I can say if they didn't make him they sure missed the boat when they just didn't pick them up and go to work,

The last one is a quartzite material. They did use them but the ones I have found in that type of material which is a softer type of quartzite by the way. The ones I have found they are grinding types of artifacts or what I call grinders. After using them for so long they will actually be square. I have one near me made out of the same type and color. I don't have my camera but will show you a group pic on my grinders. I have 1 real nice one that is square but made from a creek rock.

@rls Get yourself a mineral and rock book with pics in it. I have one it will help you to find the better rocks that they would of chosen. My book is rocks of GA so you can read it and look it might help you. I know it did me. Then get yourself a nice artifact book (I like the color pics for both books) That way you can see and compare. Most quartz in our area will crumble under pressure. They preferred the white quartz the most.
