Helping the Archies with another Dig...

As we have detected this field for about 5 years & plotted many finds, we were asked to help with the detecting when the Archies started their Archaeological evaluation trenches. This is in readiness for a big development project. It's actually our first project with this group who won the contract but are not local.
The Archies were surprised at the number of GPSed items we had from this 1 field but we had to explain to them that although we have most periods represented the only period we think had any occupation was the Early-Middle Saxon, circa 6th-8th C.
They are doing 40 trenches in 1 week with 5 Archies, plus 2 digger drivers. We hope to return on Friday, although Cru'Dad may pop back before.

These are the finds we gave up to the dig;

Tudor Button
Tudor Clothes Fastener
Tudor Scabbard Chape
14th C Medieval Buckle
Henry III Cut Hammered Halfpenny

We were actually very surprised with how much we found in the spoil, one of our best ever 4.5 hr sessions for the Archies.

Yes to the expense, assuming its still profitable, but on this one they carried the risk.

so when you dig with them do they provide coffee and donuts in the morning and beer in the afternoon?

We bring our own coffee. Donuts are not a great detecting food, & beer in the afternoon makes me sleep. They do provide a porta-loo.

Further Update;
Cru'Dad doing 3.5 hrs;

''Did a morning stint and covered a few more Trenches in the better area – so have now done Trenches [Blank] to [Blank], and except [Blank] which was not finished when I left.
All Trenching is now complete and once recording finished they will start refilling from tomorrow.

Finds were usual iron debris and some smaller lead plus 2 buttons. Better finds were:

Small Roman Spoon bowl with part of lower handle with pin attaching bowl.

Circa 8cm long Roman Iron Stylus

Lead Spindle Whorl and probably late Medieval large Trefoil shaped mount once gilt.

In Trench [Blank] they have found more Post holes and a corner of a building (Wooden).''

The Archies are the under earth Police. If you give them coffee and donuts in the morning, then not much will get done in the morning except drinking coffee and eating donuts. Bring in beer in the afternoon and the whole day is a waste.
