Took advantage of another short day at work and did some swinging. I tracked down another land owner this AM and got the go ahead on a couple sites on their farm. The first site ended up being built over and all that was left was the barn area. I found a well and hunted nearby for an hour or so and called it quits. On to site #2. Pulled out the GPS and started walking for a half a mile through the fields. Made it to the waypoint and turned on the machine. spent 15 minutes wandering around in circles and couldn't find an iron patch. Moved down the hill a bit towards the creek and boom...iron patch galore. This was a large site and I dug alot of iron for what I came out with. My first good target was the 1830 LC. I thought this is going to be good. :laughing7: I kept a swinging and dug some suspender clips , a matching pair. That's only happened for me twice. I dug the open hole thimble and remembered seeing someone else dug one here on Tnet recently. Then came the wedding band and what I believe to be a shoe buckle frame :dontknow:. Last but not least came the small padlock body missing the shank. Pretty cool little lock, never found one that small. It got really hot fast and the sun was cooking so I had to bail out. I will be baccccck.

HB, how did you get your findings so clean that the detail of the designs show up so nicely?
You did a great job cleaning them. Thanks for the show.
HH, Roger

Very cool lock with the art-deco designs. Maybe it was on a small jewelry box still nearby.

So you used an old map and a gps? Way to go.

very nice! great spot ya found! good luck on future hunts!

Great finds!!!!

Ive found buckle frames like that and have always thought them to be a sash buckle. Like the ones worn by ladies in the CW period.

This one is of a later period and isnt exactly the same but it is of the style used for a sash buckle.

The difference between this buckle and a sash buckle frame is the presence of the pinholes in the back for the chape. It is certainly a shoe buckle--and a colonial era one at that.

good looking finds HB

Good to know. I guess I need to have a closer look at some of them Ive found :)

You are on a good spot and I'm sure there is more hiding amongst the iron. Work it slow and get the iron out of the ground and you will be rewarded. Your shoe buckle frame is of the type in use right before the end of the "shoe buckle era". A lot of experts feel that was around 1800, but I believe they were in use at least until 1810. I have found quite a few of those little "mickey mouse" padlocks on late 18th century/early 19th century sites. They are a good indicator of an early site. Good luck on your next trip. Should be some more coins in there.

Here is a little info on shoe buckle pin terminals that I feel is accurate based on my experience.

Lot of nice, early relics in that bunch :headbang: even though you didn't get the whole buckle, it's more of one than I've ever gotten.. It will display nicely :headbang:

Thanks Jeff, I'm going to go back and find the rest of it later today I hope.

Your right Steve, it is a good spot. Spots as old as this one are hard to find around here and you bet I will be going back and working it slow. Thanks for the pic info.
