Hey folks. Some of you may have seen where I posted on a related Facebook group a couple weeks ago about a big wheat penny hoard I had discovered. If you didn't see it, the short version is that I ended up with about 1,070 or so pennies from a single hole at an old homesite. You can watch that hunt happen on our YouTube channel "Virginia History Detectors." Well, I went back last weekend and after finding a few wheat pennies I had missed on the surface I decided to open up some test holes around that very spot. What happened next was nothing short of incredible. I turned over a scoop of dirt and multiple Large Cents and 2 Cent coins just started falling off the shovel. I knew I had hit something a lot better than a pile of wheats so I went back to the truck and got my camera to record the whole experience. I dug for the next hour or so during which I managed to recover 54 Large Cents, 39 2 Cents, 10 Flying Eagles, King James II halfpence (1685-1687), and about a dozen or so wheat pennies. That’s 250 years of coin dates from within the same hoard and I'm now an official card carrying member of 1600's club which has been a goal of mine. My theory is that the same family had an area under the floorboards where they hid valuables for generation after generation, stuff got lost or covered up with dirt, people died, etc. Many of the coins still have paper roll wrapping around their edges and many were coming out of the ground still stacked and stuck together. This hoard hasn’t yielded any silver or gold yet but I’m holding out hope that it’s down there somewhere. I will of course be going back and to excavate and sift the entire area and we'll soon post the video of that as well! It was an unforgettable once in a lifetime experience and I cannot wait to get back in there!!! Below is the link to the video of this hunt... enjoy and please subscribe to see what we find next when we sift out the rest of the hoard!!! Thanks!!!

One of the coolest finds I’ve seen on here. Congrats! Somebody could go nuts trying figure out how what could have led to this being left there. The owner almost certainly would have been a collector. Otherwise the gap from oldest to youngest is hard to explain. Anyways I’m voting banner silver or not. This isn’t gonna be happening everyday. Super cool and I hope you hit another pocket and hookup with gold or silver.

My banner vote is in. What an amazing find.
