Hello my new friends! I just am getting started and found this piece of history - don't know what it is. Ended up leaving this at the site and didn't think to measure, and obviously didn't clean it up. It is approx.4 x 6" and please note the uneven curved edge on the right. Is this a broken shovel or hoe ( I see no evidence of attachments),home-made hand scraper or other tool? Site (homestead) occupied from 1825-1950's. Love to hear opinions.... image.jpg

1st - I noticed this is your very first post. So, welcome aboard from the great state of Pennsylvania (USA).

2nd - You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

3rd - A few different (angle) pictures would help - but, it sure looks like an axe head.

Welcome to Tnet. Is the other end much thicker than the curved end? Possibly a splitting wedge or broken ax? Very good find.

Depending on thickness I would agree with splitting wedge (not hoe)
