Holed coins

Found my first holed coins. Two in one day!

Those appear to be what I find all the time. Zinc Lincoln pennies eaten by the acid soil. Sometimes the pennies are almost completely eaten away. They don’t look like intentional holes, just the result of time spent in the ground. Unfortunately any penny minted after 1982 is susceptible to this kind of damage. Here’s what some of them look like after a long time in the ground.

I found my first 'holed' Lincoln a few years ago, this is the only 'modern holed' coin I've found so far.

I find a lot of pre-1900 'holed' coins each year... guess I need to detect more parks.
Yours look like they came out of a river or from a fresh water beach in WI?

I actually found a pair of holed wheaties (they were glued together to make a pendant) a while back. I had forgotten about that. Stay safe and keep swingin.

I know what you mean with the pennies

I found one the other day too.

Yes, water eats them up, but these were along a wooded trail. No fertilizer or anything like that - darn things just rot. Also found a 1919 wheat at just 2" with heavy patina that looks like grass, and the date is very hard to see, so did not include it.

I found a modern quarter and penny with a men's wedding band on a gold chain last year and this year I found a holed large cent. I do wonder if large cents were holed to make it easier to carry, but that doesn't seem practical. Maybe the value of a large cent became so small that they were carried as momentos?
