Ha! Good eye, BC...I've never seen that error before, I wonder if it is a common error on the 1918 Mercury dime. Thx for sharing, Ddf.

I've found a few dozen NEW varieties in my collection of dug coins.
Quite frankly, aside from a few that came out of the ground in jars and other objects, the pockets full of silver and coppers that filled my pockets every time I went treasure hunting in the late 70's and up through the entire 80's..I never looked at any of them.
Until now!
I really miss those days.
The other old schools know what I am talking about.
When the transition from Beat Frequency Oscillator or BFO switched to the new Analog metal detectors!
OH MY WORD!
The amazing difference that discrimination made!
It was the root excuse for many unsuccessful detectorists.
Laziness!.
Crank that knob up to 10 and cherry pick all that early silver and coppers.
Yep, sure did.
However, those who weren't lazy about pull tabs, enjoyed the benefits of everyone else in the hobby at the time, who heard the stories of the silvers being picked clean.. More importantly, where!
Yeah, I dug enough trash to probably fill the Pontiac Silverdome... But with that trash came the small gold and big gold coins and rings.
Go ahead, please don't hunt the ferrous targets!!

Sorry for rambling a bunch of nonsense.. Its who I am.

I've never sold a coin in my life. Even with the crappy condition of the coin.. In a well publicized auction, I could see a few different people really wanting a coin with a makeshift crucifix on it... Lol.
I've read about that before.
People will flock from all over the planet to a place where some religious figure appeared in the grain of the bark on a tree.

Remember, die cracks aren't varieties, they're errors.

Dang it. Someone else told me that cracks, cuds and broadstrikes are normal manufacturing process and don't add any value. I don't really care about that aspect.. Unless of course I come across an unknown DD and it sells for six figures lol

Keep dreaming that six figure dream... I'd be happy with a two figure find at this point.

I guess that Ken Potter book really bit me!
