Hook, sword hanger?

Found this at old home site near river. Have dug late colonial era items as well as CW relics in the site. No coins or anything that seem to be later than CW at site. This may be the exception.

answered in your other post,stating that I dont beleive that is a sword hanger(I have found quite a few,and nobody was packin swords round here looking at the picture here,I see what appears to be the rusted out "rivet",where the thin spring steel piece would have been attached to the shank as a keeper......

It doesn't have the exact form of a civil war era American sword scabbard-hanger snaplink. It might be a scabbard-hanger from a later time. In the late-1800s through early 1900s, many Fraternal organizations (such as the Masons, Knights Of Pythias, Shriners, etc) had lots of swords. (Scads of those are for sale on Ebay.) Then again, it might not be a scabbard-hanger snaplink. There are many kinds of similar-looking snaplinks.

I wonder if it could have been part of a rifle sling or musket I know my 22 has 2 spots for a sling to attach and the loop part has the same look to it.

mr.b ..... ha ha...... hope some coins are in yours. I have hit 3 very similar sites this year and dozens of flat button etc. But not one coin.

When trying to correctly identify such objects, its important to note their size. The hole in yours appears to be only 3/4-inch wide, at the most. That disqualifies it from being a slinghook for any rifle or musket except perhaps a very small civilian one, like a .22-caliber. I'm thinking it is more likely for something like a dog's leash.

TheCannonballGuy, I think the fields have been in continuous agricultural use for a long time. I have found a couple of modern drink lids in the area from the field workers and a few shotgun hulls. Although it appears to have been there for a while due to the patina, I wouldn't doubt it fell out of the out of the hunting coat of a bird hunter many decades ago.
