March was the driest in 50 years, so called April Showers has be as dry as a bone. Farmers are having issues feeding their live stock, as the grass & hay is not growing & they used up last years hay. This year the hay will be poor, just to compound the problem :( Wheat prices (bread) will probably increase with the poor yield :P

I spent 2 hours jumping on my spade on solid clay, maybe making 1/2inch every 2 jumps :( I'm not going out again until the rain comes, but it maybe some weeks :'(

Anyway, managed a few finds:

Plenty of 19th C Lead  2 Smooth Enfields numbered '1' inside :icon_thumright: (just checked, these are my first No.'1's) :)
1 nice 18th C pewter Button
3 Scrappy Roman Coins
My fav find - Victorian Coin Weight (for a Gold Sovereign) :icon_thumright: A new addition to the weight collection.

Re: Hot, Hot, Hot...

You deserve those finds mate :icon_thumleft:

There was no way I was going outside today :laughing7:

Re: Hot, Hot, Hot...

Nice hunt Cru, I like those Enfield Bullets. The Confederate States of America imported most of theirs from England as well. :icon_thumleft:

Send us your rain, this weather is killing me, glad I don't hunt in your conditions. If I were to come over, it would need to be the middle of winter :laughing9:

No sure if you remember but it the field over the track on the hill, where you got a Roman coin, & we (US crowd & us) gave up because of the heavy clay. Well the cows/bull is temporarily out of the field so it gave me a chance. But its easier chipping away at tarmac than this stuff, & in this heat its 2 hours, 2 frozen water bottles later & time to quit :P

Re: Hot, Hot, Hot...

The amazing CRUSADER has an achiles heel ... heat!
It had better cool off soon in England because we need our daily fix of Crusader finds.

Will pray for rain in England, for you, the cows, the farmers, and everyone who eats bread :D .

Born Free
In Oregon where it is raining once again.

Of course I remember! That was my first Roman coin ;D

It doesn't sound like much fun, I think I'll stay in the shade :laughing7:

Re: Hot, Hot, Hot...

We also need rain. Nice finds and HH, Mike

UPDATE:

Just did a little research on the weight:

Circa 1842
Made by the Brothers William & Thomas Avery, started the business in 1818 but has its roots back to 1750s. Avery became a household name & was successful right into the late 20th Century :coffee2:

Very interesting finds once again Cru! Was your father out with you this go round? :icon_scratch:
Nice to see you posting some bullet finds! :icon_thumright: I really like this button, pity about the
condition though. :'(

Cheers,
Dave

Yes, Cru'dad was there ;D

The 18th C pewter button is actually in great nick for a ploughed field find

Nice Cru. :headbang: I hate hot/hot/hot weather. :D And know about that hard clay when it's dry almost need a chipping hammer to make progress. I think my spoon mold spot still holds the candle on the hardest dirt I've had to dig. :o It was a fight to dig that stuff,& to have to get down to 10 -12" of it :-\ I remember once down a couple inches the old spade would squal on the dirt it was so hard.Hope you see some rain soon sounds like you guy's need it over there.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

Still some good finds :icon_thumleft: come over here the rain,s and wind will not stop i been out 2 times this Spring digging in mud lucky if the temp,s get near 55* :BangHead: Jim

I expect a coin weight to be a very unusual find in a field ?

Very cool !

Very nice finds, love the coin weight!!

Here we use a hoe all year, and in the summer it has a pick on the other side...

Congrats!!
