good posts from Kevin1 and Professional Miner .being new your probly not going deep enough. ive dredged in that area and its there! you just need to do some deeper research. a good idea is for you to join a local club abd buddy up with a seasoned miner/dredger to get this info you need to learn. its right there!!

you have to sample. but generally useless gravel will be all loose and unconsolidated ,pay gravel typically sits on hard pack and/or on top of bed rock, but you must pan the sample

At first I thought of all the previous answers and then I had to backtrack to my personal experiences having a geology background.
So here is how I did it:

I know what type of rocks to look for. When I see the right types of rocks I simply go test/sample areas.
Of course this is prospecting.
I also pay attention to the geology and the mining history of the area; as that can help you greatly. I am not familiar with Georgia and suggest you simply do some research....pretty easy now (on the net)....we used to go to the library and such.

But rock types are a great indicator. Deep rooted unique igneous rocks tell a great story and learning about rocks can lead to success.

Highly mineralized.
High Silica Igneous rocks.
