High lonesome, left coast. Sorry, this is my only photo.

Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine"

If its not that, than I have no idea.

You would have to be a fluent in petroglyphs and I am not sorry. I'm leaning towards Vikings answer though. Probably a freshly divorced native writing a song telling of a day when his woman listened..........just kidding for the ladies of the forum...........

And now I KNOW I like this forum. Ahhhhhh zeppelin.

. Totally laughing good one ! Great song!

that looks like squatch writing, but the interpretation isn't clear

If you look at it just right... it looks like peyote buttons to me.Going round and round....

Hello all,

This rock art is in a high desert valley, very close to a small natural spring. The dark hole on the upper right is about 8 inches deep and appears to have been a mortar.

This is in a outcrop of what I think is volcanic tuff or tufa. I had walked by it a number of times over the years before the light bulb lit up. It is in an area that bordered the territories of a couple different tribal groups, the Klamath / Modocs and the Northern Paiute.

I was pondering if it might be a "Welcome to our valley, do not wash your feet in the spring that's just behind you. These hills have eyes." kinda thing.

Could be a marker of sorts. I would think they had some way of letting others know whos land it was.

Hard to discern the exact design shown. Petroglyphs afford us an insight into the minds of the ancients. Many times they represent clan symbols. Other times hunting scenes and game animals, some probably designed to promote hunting "magic" or success. Oft times shamanic figures are shown in transformative states, half human, half animal for instance. Where there is one, there will likely be more, so keep your eyes peeled for sure.

Here is a photo taken at the Mark Rock petroglyph site on Narragansett Bay, RI. Years ago, I used an old map of the site, determined the scale used, and hit a bullseye in finding this double water petroglyph. The site is almost entirely buried at this point. Sign of the Water Clan? Who can say at this point in time.

Whatever it might depict, its very cool. If I found that in the woods around here I would probably have to run home and change my boxers. Thanks for the view, hope you get some insight on what it might be.

On a work related trip, I stopped by a small Native American museum somewhere in West Virginia. I wish I could tell you exactly where it was, but for most of my travels, I'm lost. Lol! In the museum I saw 3 pieces like the one above. The pieces all fit together to form a thick wall about 2 1/2 feet tall. Their were obviously more pieces to the wall, but were never found. The carving on the museum piece wasn't quite as detailed as your piece, but pretty close. I do remember the place would not allow cameras due to recent theft.
