How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I was just wondering how many collect pottery sherd's also ? I have a dozen or so good size sherds, but any good size pieces of sherds are hard to find here in farming country where the get broken up by farming equipment.

Would you consider parting with a few sherd's ?

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I collect them as I detect. someday I hope to make something out of them.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

There are a lot of them in Fla. Not many are big enough to mess with. A few have designs and rims, handles, etc.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I used to pick up every piece I saw and like larson I had boxes and boxes of them. I have since given a bunch away and now I only pick up the really nice Rim Shards, Handle pieces, or anything with nice looking encising on it.

Here's a few pictures of some of my Pottery Shards. The case in the last picture has almost the entire bottom shelf full of Rim and Handle Shards.

flintdigger, if you PM your address to me I'll send you some pieces. I don't give away my Handle pieces, but I can pick you out some nice Rim Shards and encised pieces.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I have buckets full. I am sure there are a few whole pots in some of them. I like to frame the stuff in shadow boxes and give to friends.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I've probably found less than 20 pieces of pottery since I've been hunting. All but one is Mississippian mussel mixed. I keep them because they're scarce here and there's something to learn from them. The other piece is clay with a cord marked design. My buddy Richard gave me some very interesting pieces, including some rim pieces and a sweet base piece, he's a good man.

Pottery is a bigger passion for me than other artifact mediums. I collect shards, vessels, whatever, from anywhere.

Larson and Chong sent me some wonderful examples from their areas and I really appreciate it. Pottery is quite the addiction, I swear it's worse than crack.

I've seen odd pieces glued together to make a bowl. It was an interesting way to display them.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I get chards sent me all the time. They just sit in a box. I can go down by the river ( private property) & find buckets full. I don't bother.
Birdies are my fave. I'm a flint lover..

Molly.

I like crack both kinds, A member sent me some nice pieces also very neat and i agree with matt, never found a piece here in Ohio, but will be hunting a ft ancient site up here soon see what turns up...

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

The reason that I like trying to collect pottery shards of any size is because living where I do there is o much farming going on that you hardly ever find anything bigger than the end of your thumb. I like to add the more interesting pieces or the pieces that are a little bigger to display's.

I'm glad I don't have this addiction.....yet. Because honestly between the hardstone and flint I don't have the room for it. I like pottery and appreciate it but nothing compares to the crack that is flinty knives and points, lol, jmo.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I guess the main reason that I collect all sorts of artifacts whole or broken is because, I have been in a wheelchair most of my life and there have been a lot of good place's that I have had to pass up simply because I couldn't physically get to them and that has limited me to the place's that I can get to.

Re: How Many Here Collect Pottery Sherd's

I only have found pottery sherds at one site I have collected - even though I have found late Woodland points at a number of sites. I treasure the few pieces I have found.
